For a long time, the X-Plane 11 pilots were eagerly awaiting the move from OpenGL to Vulkan as a graphics engine, but now it's finally here. As of today, X-Plane 11.5 is available as beta, which allows the flight simulator to be rendered over volcano and metal for the first time. This should primarily bring a considerable plus in performance. A full list of features of the new version as well as some important aspects of the new graphic engines can be found in this post on the X-Plane blog.

Activation of rendering via volcano and metal

If you want to try Vulkan, you can simply change the rendering in the option to the new engine. After a restart of the simulator it will run in this environment. You can see this by a corresponding note in the start screen. However, it is important to note that not (yet) all add-ons are executable under Vulkan.
